We have tried, as much as possible, to reduce the weight of our packs and the equipment that we carry. We like the idea of packing "ultra-light", but we also like to travel in some sense of comfort. For some types of equipment we own multiple items so that we can have a choice, usually between light and comfort, whichever is more appropriate for the hike.

There are a lot of places on the internet where you can read all about the pros and cons of ultra-light backpacking vs. traditional backpacking. We will spare you that discussion here and suffice it to say, it is our goal to pack as light as possible, given a reasonable cost and comfort. Our goal, on a normal weekend trip, is 50 pounds between the 2 packs.
